Earth Day Theme: Plastic Pollution

This year’s theme for Earth Day is “End Plastic Pollution". As consumers, we use plastic every day. It’s become a pervasive part of our lives and a significant environmental issue. Plastic bags have taken over our beaches, cluttered our oceans, and become a burden on our waste streams and landfills.

It’s estimated that 6.9 billion U.S. tons of plastic waste has been generated to date. Close to 80% of this waste has ended up in landfills and pollutes our environment. Only 9% of all plastics are recycled.

Today, this event has become a global phenomenon as the largest grassroots movement for the environment. 180 countries are expected to participate in Earth Hour this year by dimming or turning off lights from 8:30 to 9:30 pm in their local time zones.
